Costas Papadimitriou received his MSc and PhD (1990) in Applied Mechanics
at Caltech. In 2000 he joined University of Thessaly (UTH), Greece, as
Associate Professor of Structural Dynamics with tenure and in 2006 was promoted
to Professor. Since 2000 he is the director of the System Dynamics
Laboratory of UTH. He also held the position
of the Executive Vice-President of the European Association of Structural
Dynamics (EASD) (2011- 2017). In the past, he held positions of visiting
professor at ETH-Zurich (2011) and K.U.Leuven (2000); research
associate at Caltech and Jet Propulsion Laboratory-JPL (1996-1999) and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
(1995-1996); visiting assistant professor at Caltech (1994-1995) and assistant
professor at Texas A&M University (1991-1994).

He is the recipient of the 2014 European Association of Structural
Dynamics (EASD) Senior Award in Computational Structural Dynamics. He served as associate editor for the ASCE Journal of
Engineering Mechanics (2009-2017) and the International Journal of Reliability
and Safety (2005-present), member of the editorial board for the International
Journal of Structural Control and Health Monitoring (2008-present), the Journal
of Structural Monitoring and Maintenance (2014-present), the Journal of Smart
Cities (2015-2018), and Structural Sensing Section of Frontiers in Build
Environment (2015-present). He is a member of ASCE and SEM and served as chair
of the “Dynamics” committee of ASCE-Engineering Mechanics Institute (2012-2014).
He also served as a member of the Sectoral Scientific
Council on Engineering Sciences of the Greek National Council of Research and
Technology (Oct. 2014 – 2016).

His research interests include Bayesian inference for
uncertainty quantification in engineering science; probabilistic structural
dynamics; structural identification, finite element model updating, structural
health monitoring; optimal experimental design; and structural reliability. Main
application areas are civil and mechanical engineering structures. Recently he
has applied Bayesian methodologies to computational fluid dynamics, molecular
dynamics, nanotechnology and biological models. He has published more than 78
referred journal articles, 180 conference proceedings articles, co-edited one
book, four special journal issues, 5 conference proceedings, and one
Encyclopedia section in Structural Identification and Health Monitoring. He has
given numerous semi-plenary, keynote and invited lecturers in conferences. He acts
as reviewer in more than 50 international journals. He has organized Symposia, Mini-symposia and session for international
conferences; he is member of several international scientific committees; He
has coordinated and lectured a number of one-day pre-conference courses and
one-week short courses in the areas of uncertainty quantification, structural
identification and health monitoring. He served as guest editor for two special journal issues on Structural Identification, SHM and Reliability published in “International Journal of Reliability and Safety” and in “Structural Safety”. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
