Open Positions

Innovative Training Network

Marie Sklodowska-Curie

DyVirt

DyVirt is a European Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme. The scientific aim of DyVirt is to radically improve the level of trust that can be attributed to virtual models of the dynamic behaviour of engineering structures by augmenting models with data and advanced uncertainty analysis. These new developments will be implemented as a series of new verification and validation methods, with applications focused primarily on the wind energy sector.

We are seeking an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR 8) to join the System Dynamics Laboratory (SDLab) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (www.mie.uth.gr) of the University of Thessaly (www.uth.gr), Greece. The position has a duration of 36 months and can lead to a PhD degree. The successful candidate must register for the PhD program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Thessaly. The earliest starting date is September 2018.

Eligibility Criteria: The applicant may be of any nationality. The applicant shall at the time of recruitment be in the first four years of his/her research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. The applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the host institute for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.

POSITIONS

ESR 8 – PhD Position: Development of Bayesian Optimal Experimental Design (OED) Tools (LINK)

Application Process: Applicants for the open position ESR 8 should submit by email to Professor Costas Papadimitriou (costasp@uth.gr) the following:

– detailed CV

– academic transcripts

– at least two names for academic references (with telephone numbers and email addresses)

– a motivation letter (1 to 2 pages max)

– electronic copies of academic diplomas and certificates

The application deadline is June 27, 2018. However, if a suitable candidate is not found the application process will be open until the position is filled. It is not guaranteed that applications received after June 27, 2018 will be evaluated.

Contact Information: For more information you may contact Costas Papadimitriou, Professor of Structural Dynamics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Thessaly, Email: costasp@uth.gr, Tel: (+30) 2421074006.

The Hosting Group: The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) (http://www.mie.uth.gr) of the University of Thessaly (http://www.uth.gr) is involved in the DyVirt project. Within the DME, the research units “Systems Dynamics Laboratory (SDLab)” and “Laboratory of Mechanics and Strength of Materials (LMSM)” will participate to the DyVirt network. The SDLab is performing internationally leading research on data-driven uncertainty quantification in engineering science. SDLab research expertise include: probabilistic modeling, Bayesian inference, optimal experimental design, structural identification, structural health monitoring, structural reliability, design optimization under uncertainty. A wide range of applications is covered, including mechanical, structural and civil engineering systems, as well as smart infrastructure networks (e.g. transportation and water distribution networks). Through collaborations with international research groups in Europe and USA, members of SDLab (http://www.mie.uth.gr/labs/sdl) are also involved in research related to data-driven modeling and uncertainty quantification and propagation in the areas of molecular dynamics, nanotechnology, computational fluid dynamics, and recently in biomechanical/biological systems (e.g. multi-scale modelling of muscle tissues, epidemic spread on networks, optimal sensor cell distribution in fish lateral line), impacting developments in the broader field of data-driven simulation-based engineering and life sciences. The research expertise in LMSM include: computational mechanics; continuum mechanics; biomechanics.
