George Kozanidis was born in Athens in 1974. He graduated from the department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering of the University of Thessaly in 1997. He received his MSc degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University, USA, in 1998, his MSc degree in Operations Research and his PhD degree in Industrial Engineering, both from Northeastern University, USA, in 2002. During his graduate studies in USA, he worked as a Teaching and Research Assistant and as an Adjunct Lecturer. In 2002, he received the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Engineering of Northeastern University.
He has worked at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Thessaly, as an Adjunct Lecturer and Postdoctoral Researcher between April 2004 and April 2007, as a Lecturer between April 2007 and June 2011, and as an Assistant Professor between April 2011 and June 2018. Since June 2018, he has been an Associate Professor of Optimization Methods of Production/Service/Transportation Systems in the same Department. He teaches the undergraduate courses “Linear Programming” and “Mathematical Programming” and the graduate course “Optimization Methods and Tools” in the MSc Graduate Program “Supply Chain Management and Logistics“. In the past, he has also taught the undergraduate courses “Factory Management”, “Statistical Quality Control”, “Integer Programming & Combinatorial Optimization” and “Theory of Reliability & Maintenability”, and the graduate courses “Scheduling – Project Management” and “Quality, Reliabity & Maintenance Systems”.
His research interests lie in the area of Operations Research/Management Science/Data Science (Design and Analysis of Optimization Algorithms, Airline Transportation Management and Optimization, Supply Chain Management and Logistics Optimization, Stochastic Modeling and Analysis of Manufacturing/Service Systems). He has participated in several funded research scientific projects, both as a principal investigator and as a researcher. He has also served as a referee/reviewer for several international scientific journals and conferences. He is a member of the Hellenic Operations Research Society, INFORMS and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Since 2012, he maintains a steady research collaboration with a multinational company specializing in the development of software for airline management. In the context of this collaboration, he is responsible for the development of specialized optimization algorithms (column generation, branch and price, assignment, etc.) for the efficient management of airline operations (crew scheduling, fleet assignment, flight scheduling, tail assignment, commercial planning, vacation planning, preferential bidding, disruption handling, training scheduling, etc.).
