The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) at the University of Thessaly (UTH) is a well-established academic department that has managed to build a strong tradition in research and education over its 25+ years of operation.
The Department integrates a wide range of activities in mechanical engineering, such as fluid dynamics and transport phenomena, thermal sciences and combustion, magnetohydrodynamics and fusion technology, mechanics and materials science, dynamics and control, mechanical systems design and manufacturing, fuel cell engineering and hydrogen technologies, operations management, and operations research.
Despite their diversity, all these activities share a common mission: to provide high-level education in the science of Mechanical Engineering, to produce pioneering knowledge and expertise, and to transfer the knowledge generated for the benefit of society at the local, national, and international levels.
The vision of the Department is to become a globally recognized Mechanical Engineering department, known for its excellent and modern education, the high scientific training, education, academic and professional integrity of its graduates, the cutting-edge knowledge and expertise it generates, the notable scientific contributions of its teaching and research staff, and finally, the successful and exemplary transfer of its knowledge and technologies to society.
The Department’s educational innovation is evidenced by initiatives such as strengthening the laboratory-based character of studies, incorporating case studies into courses, enhancing specialized IT content in specific subjects, training students in the use of specialized industrial software, developing a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum plan (content and course interdependencies), establishing a Department-level Office of Quality Assurance in Education and Research, developing performance indicators, conducting evaluations, supporting the Curriculum through digital learning material, and developing functional course websites.
The results to date speak for themselves. The DME at UTH was the first Polytechnic department in Greece to be evaluated by external reviewers in 2010, receiving very positive feedback. Moreover, a survey conducted by the University of Thessaly’s Career Services Office shows that almost all of the Department’s graduates (>1200 so far) are employed in both the public and private sectors, while some are pursuing postgraduate studies in higher education institutions both in Greece and abroad.
The Department’s contribution to research and the international reputation of its academic staff are confirmed, among other things, by the publication of significant, highly cited results in prestigious scientific journals, the development of high-tech research laboratories, participation in competitive national, EU, and international research programs, and the successful structured education, mentoring, and supervision of young researchers, primarily PhD candidates.
We hope that our website reflects part of the richness and high quality of the Department’s educational and research activities, as well as the passion of the people – professors and students, technical and administrative staff – who bring them to life.

Associate Professor Georgios Kozanidis
