Herricos Stapountzis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1950. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens in 1973 and pursued graduate studies at Imperial College, Aeronautics Department, UK, where he was awarded the Ph.D. and DIC degrees in 1979 in the field of Unsteady Aerodynamics. He served his military service at the Greek Air Force Technology Research Center (1979-1980) and then he moved to University of Cambridge (CUED- DAMTP), UK, as post-doctoral research associate, working in the area of Turbulent Diffusion and Mixing untill 1982. Then he was research fellow for one year (1983) at the University of Ottawa, Department of Mechanical Engineering in Canada, doing experimental work for the study of the flow inside a model of a nuclear reactor. In 1984 he was Project Engineer at the Public Power Corporation of Greece (division of Water Turbines). From 1985 until 2000 he was Faculty member of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He has been Visiting Scholar at VPI (USA), TU-Delft (NL) and Stanford – CTR (USA).

Since October 2000 he is Associate Professor at the University of Thessaly in Volos, Greece, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery. He teaches Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, and Measurement Techniques at undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests are in Unsteady Aerodynamics, Wind Engineering. Turbulent Flows in Jets and Wakes with Heat and Mass Transfer, Turbulent Diffusion and Mixing, Stochastic Simulation of Turbulent Diffusion, Vortex Shedding and Visualisation of Flows with and without Chemical Reactions.

He has served as referee for the Journal of Fluid Mech., AIAA Journal, Journal of Applied Science and Research and Journal of Fluids and Structures
