George Liberopoulos (B.S. ’85 & M.Eng. ’86, Mechanical Engineering, Cornell University; Ph.D. ’93, Manufacturing Engineering, Boston University) is a Professor of Stochastic Methods in Production Management and the Director of the Production Management Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME) at the University of Thessaly (UTH).
Before joining UTH, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Boston University (1993) and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Laboratoire d’Informatique de Sorbonne Université/CNRS (LIP6), France (1994–1996). During 2011–2017, he was a member of the Board of Commissioners of Greece’s Regulatory Authority for Railways.
He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Stochastic Models of Manufacturing and Service Operations (SMMS), where he has co-edited several collective special issues and volumes, and has served on the editorial boards of IISE Transactions, OR Spectrum, and Flexible Services and Manufacturing Journal. He is a member of INFORMS.
His research interests are in the performance evaluation and control of manufacturing and service systems, production planning and scheduling, inventory control and supply chain management, design of electricity markets, and other applications in the area of operations management, employing methodologies such as mathematical and dynamic programming, stochastic modeling and simulation, queueing and game theory, Markovian decision processes, and machine learning.
Indicative topics of his research include:
- Optimal flow control of unreliable manufacturing systems (with Michael Caramanis, Jian-Qiang Hu)
- Design and performance evaluation of kanban-type production control systems (with Yves Dallery†, Claudine Chaouiya, Stelios Koukoumialos, Isidoros Tsikis)
- Analysis of production/inventory control systems with advance demand information (with Yves Dallery, Fikri Karaesmen, Stelios Koukoumialos, Athanassios Chronis)
- Reliability analysis and performance evaluation of automated production lines (with Panagiotis Tsarouhas, George Kozanidis)
- Investigation of the effect of stockouts on the performance of inventory systems (with Isidoros Tsikis, Stefanos Delikouras)
- Flight and Maintenance Planning (with George Kozanidis, Andreas Gavranis, Christos Pitsilkas)
- Optimal production scheduling in continuous-flow industries (with Olympia Hatzikonstantinou, George Kozanidis, Dimitrios Pandelis)
- Design and analysis of electricity and reserve market mechanisms (with Panagiotis Andrianesis, George Kozanidis, Alex Papalexopoulos, Pandelis Biskas, Eufychia Kostarellou, Kostis Sakellaris, Andreas Vlachos)
- Supplier policies when buyer demand depends on past service (with Michalis Deligiannis)
- Game theoretic models of supply chain and service systems (with Michalis Deligiannis, Myron Benioudakis, Apostolos Burnetas)
More details about research activities ang grants can be found at the website of Production Management Laboratory (PML).
