Finite Element Dynamic Analysis of Steel Industrial Chimneys
Under Earthquake Loading
by John Asaniotis
Diploma Thesis, September 2002
ABSTRACT
The work focuses on the structural design of industrial chimneys under earthquake loads. Two case studies are analyzed. The first chimney is 40 meters high, whereas the second chimney has a height of 60 m, and it is located in a chemical industry in Northern Greece. An important design issue is the determination of the most critical loading (wind or earthquake). The analysis is conducted with finite elements, using both shell elements and beam elements. The results from the finite element analysis are compared with the design provisions of Eurocodes 1, 3 and 8.
